Chokeholds, arm locks, leg locks — It’s all just another day on the mats for teenage Harrow-raised grappling prodigy Dante Leon.

Since he started training in the not-so-gentle martial art of Brazilian jiu jitsu in 2007, Leon has become the Windsor-Essex area’s most accomplished and ferocious competitor in the growing combat sport.

Earlier this summer, he took his second gold medal at the World Championships of the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation — just a few weeks after celebrating his 17th birthday.

“What I love most about jiu jitsu is competing,” says Leon after a session at Tecumseh Jiu Jitsu, one of the gyms where he hones his skills.
